Beached

Just back from Jess' party... ate too much, drank too much (actually probably not too much, but my face gets red quickly. My gosh, Limin, you should have been there... excellent savignon blanc! Before I forget, it was from Two Oceans.)... and had some real eye-openers. Will absolutely blog about that once I get the photographs. Let's just say I will bet ANY of you readers from Singapore that I have just seen something none of you have ever seen. Muahaha. I think I was just sitting there with this half bemused grin on my face the whole way.

In any case. This whole process of being on exchange is AWESOME for these silly sounding reasons. I mean, my goodness, the people you meet, the things you see the entire experience of being a flummoxed fish floundering in unknown waters... I love it.

And I don't know HOW I have never blogged this song before because it had always struck me as one of the wisest pieces of advice I've ever been given (delivered in Leonardo DiCaprio's voice, notwithstanding). And I've probably raved about it to everyone I've met since 2000 when the Beach's soundtrack first came out. But never have I felt the truth of these words any more than now, and I'm seriously relying on it to deal with the whole experience:

"Beached" -- Orbital

Trust me, it's Paradise
This is where the hungry come to feed
For mine is a generation that circles the globe
In search of something we haven't tried before

So never refuse an invitation
Never resist the unfamiliar
Never fail to be polite
And never outstay your welcome

Just keep your mind open and suck in the experience
And if it hurts
You know what? It's probably worth it

You hope, and you dream
But you never believe that something is going to happen to you
Not like it does in the movies

And when it actually does
You expect it to feel different
More viseral
More real

I was waiting for it to hit me

I still believe in Paradise
But now at least I know it's not some place you can look for
'Cause it's not where you go
It's how you feel for a moment in your life
And if you find that moment?

It lasts forever

I love the first couple of stanzas, particularly. Some people think the exchange is all about fun - I also think it's about the times you're NOT having fun but you stick it out anyway just so you KNOW what it's like. But I've just been so lucky that just about everything's been FUN FUN FUN so far. big grin

"Never refuse an invitation, never resist the unfamiliar, never fail to be polite, and never outstay your welcome." Those are the coolest, best, soundest lines ever. Heh, I still remember the character of Richard was drinking snakeblood as an illustration of that scene and I was laughing so hard. Now imagine me handling about 20 different types of vibrators / dildos / lubricants / cock rings / flavoured condoms and trying to make sense of the whole affair. I never even knew cock rings existed till today - and now I can actually explain the biological wisdom behind it. Wow. We should have this instead of health education in school, honestly.

And I'll probably explain this later, but the Italians know their condoms, man!

P/S Jem. I wasn't watching porn lah, lest you ask. This was way more informative.
